Six Basic Needs of Children, Adolescents and Adults
It doesn’t matter what stage of life you are in, everyone has the same basic needs. These needs are physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, and creative. When all of these needs are satisfied, you’ll discover that your life is brimming with joy and good feelings. You’ll find your self-esteem at its highest peak whenever you are fulfilled within your daily life and activities.
Physical Needs: These needs are the basics. The need for air, water, sleep, exercise, and sex.
Emotional Needs: This is the need for praise, love, trust, security, feeling OK inside, and self-fulfilled.
Social Needs: This is the need for companionship and friendship. This is usually gained from a peer group.
Intellectual Needs: This is the need for challengingthoughts, reading, learning something new, and mind stimulation.
Spiritual Needs: This is the quiet need inside that wants to know and believe in a higher spiritual power than ourselves. This need increases our awareness and sensitivity to the greater aspects of life.
Creative Needs: This is the need to express yourself in any manner you desire. This can include the arts, dancing, acting, and writing-almost anything that allows you to feel “imaginative and inspired.
All of the above needs are usually a part of every human’s life. All of us want to have these needs met in life. Having these needs met increases our enjoyment of living and creates a healthy body and soul. So how do parents fulfill these needs in their growing children? The first way is to becomeaware that the needs of a child are the same as yours. Being empathetic to your child at all times creates a bond that nurtures the needs of your child. For example, whenever your child wants to create or make something, allow your attention to center on your child and give him whatever you think will help to inspire your child’s creativity.
My children loved to create drawings on large pieces of paper. I helped them do this by supplying them with the all the paper, crayons, paint, brushes, etc. necessary to stimulate their minds. Then I let them go to it! It was exciting to watch my child create a masterpiece of their imagination. Their artwork was sweet, beautiful and full of ingenuity. I then posted the artwork all around the house to show to their siblings and guests. Asa parent, it was my goal to communicate with my child that I truly understood and valued his desires and feelings to be creative. The empowered my child to become all that he can be at that moment. This process immediately shows your child that his opinions and thoughts are valued.
By empowering your child, you are allowing your child to take ownership of their feelings, take responsibility for their behavior, make decisions that help them grow, follow through with commitments and most importantly, to become aware of the needs and feelings of others. You are giving your child the opportunity to experience success and understand his own uniqueness. It’s rewarding for a child, adolescent and adult to have recognition and respect. By empowering yourself as well as your child, you arefostering basic needs that truly make you glow inside and out.
At different times in our lives, we are capable of doing certain things. Stay tuned to where your child’s capabilities are during his childhood and supply the above needs according to his stage in life. In fact, developmental stages continue right into old age. When a child’s needs are met, his discomforts and fears are quickly removed and he finds that his life is truly a safe and fun place to be. This feeling leads to a child that learns to trust his environment and each subsequent stage of development.
Know that meeting these six needs in your child’s life is not hard to do at any stage. Getting involved in your child’s exploration of his life doesn’t take money, but it does take time and thoughtfulness.Providing these needs throughout your child’s lifetime allows your child to go through his stages of life with a healthy regard for himself and for society. It encourages your child’s autonomy and capacity to do more with is his lifetime. Who can ask for more?

The Toy Room: A Great Room for Children And Parents
Every child needs a special, magical place: a corner of the world (or at least the house) where he can escape, have fun, and rule his tiny kingdom. And this place is the Toy room.
Why You Need a Toy Room
Toddler Toys
There are many benefits to having a designated Toy Room in the house. The first, and perhaps the most convincing argument, is that the sense of ownership–”this is my space, with my things”–helps develop a child’s security and self-esteem. Just put yourself in your child’s shoes. He’s smaller than everyone else, the grown ups set the rules, and the world seems like such a big place with scary and unfamiliar things and experiences. But the Toy room becomes his sanctuary. He is surrounded by everything he loves, and has complete control over what happens within thewalls of the toy room. Does he play with the blocks or the ball? Will he read a book or paint? Nobody can tell him what to do. Child psychologists also believe that a toy room can help him become more independent, since it encourages him to make small but simple decisions without mom and dad hovering over his shoulder.
For parents, the toy room is an enclosed, designated area where they can leave the child and not worry about his safety. This leaves them free to attend to chores or get a precious half hour of “me time”.

How to Set up a Toy Room
-Make sure that the Toy Room is completely child-proof, especially if you cannot see the child from where you will be staying. Windows should be securely locked (you can buy clips or window guards). If you have Venetian blinds,make sure that the cords are tied well above the child’s reach (they can get strangled on them). Wall sockets must have plastic protectors. Other common hazards are: exposed cords, breakables away, and sharp table corners.
-Invest in a baby monitor for small children. It’s best if you can hear them if they cry–just so can quickly check that they haven’t gotten hurt.
-Choose furniture (tables and chairs, cabinets, book shelves, or coat racks) that are specifically designed for your child’s age and size. They can climb on a tall adult’s and then crash down to the floor, or slip while trying to reach a book on a shelf that’s too high.
-If your child’s older and able to follow instructions, give simple toy room safety rules. Better yet, remove anything that would possibly causedanger beyond his ability to control himself. For example, instead of saying “don’t run around with the sharp scissors” give him specially designed scissors for kids.
Toy Room Furniture
-Toy chest. Keep small Toys organized and out of the way to avoid slipping. If your child has a lot of Toys, try breaking them into groups and then rotating them. Not only is this neater, it prevents a small child from becoming overwhelmed (and when you bring out an old toy that he hasn’t seen in a long time, he’ll treat it like it’s brand new!)
-Book shelves. Encourage a love for reading by keeping books readily accessible. Make reading a special bonding moment as well–snuggle together to read aloud a favorite fairytale!
-Table and chair. A child needs a table for writing,drawing, and other activities that need a bare and elevated surface: putting together puzzles, crafting, playing with clay, or the impromptu teddy bear tea party. Make sure that the table and chair at the right height, and that he doesn’t need to slouch over or arch his shoulders to reach the table.
-Art easel. Drawing, painting and other creative activities encourage imagination and creativity, and help strengthen the hand muscles for writing. (Did you know that many pre-schoolers have trouble keeping up at school just because they don’t like writing?).
Other optional toy room furniture are tents (for hide and seek play), sleeping mats (for nap times and sleep overs), and clothes racks for jackets.
Classic Toys for your Toy Room
There are traditional toys withoutwhich no toy room could ever be considered complete. Be sure to stock up on these classics–and keep a spare copy of your child’s favorite toy in case it gets broken or lost!
Balls. If you’re worried about your child throwing it around and breaking something in the toy room, have “indoor balls” that are smaller and made of light weight materials like foam. Develop hand eye coordination Balls and are one of the few toys that are more fun when shared (great for play dates).
Dolls and stuffed animals. These toys are not only comforting and fun to hug, but are handy for imaginative play. Why not treat your child to a beautiful doll house?
Paper, Crayons, and other art materials. If you’re worried that your child will scrawl on the walls of your beautifully decorated toyroom, buy special “washable” crayons that can be easily wiped off with water.
Blocks. Stack them up into cities or kingdoms. With a little imagination your child can also use them in conjunction with toys and dolls.
Puzzles. These help develop logic and spatial reasoning … not to mention patience! Choose puzzles that are appropriate for your child’s age and skill, since getting something too complex will only discourage him.

Toy Ideas for Children with Cerebral Palsy and Special Needs
One of the more common problems with mainstream Toys is that they are meant to be used with two hands-often times children with cerebral palsy will have limited use of one side of the body or the use of only one hand.
Toys should be fun and children should have a feeling of accomplishment or success when playing-not frustrated or reminded of what they cannot do.
Toddler Toys
Many of the commercial toys on the market can be adapted or used by children with cerebral palsy.
There are many toys that you can buy at any Toy store or department store that are affordable and fun to use. Look for toys that can be used with one hand.
Musical instruments are great for this-trumpet, harmonica, xylophone or maracas. These also develop a sense of cause and effect with youngchildren and help controlled movement with older children.
Magnetic type Toys are all the rage and a big hit with kids of all ages-there are tons of magnetic Toys available in many forms-magnetic jig saw puzzles, magnetic construction toys and magnetic marbles.
A simple ball is a lot of fun and great for developing coordination-get a neat ball that glows in the dark, flashes lights or play music when you roll it.
Toys or play that involve the senses will help with sensory integration development.
Sand and water are great for this. You can also fill a empty dish pan with uncooked rice-a great makeshift sand box for a rainy day.
A tip to avoid sand box mess: put the sandbox on cement blocks-will be at waist level and kids won’t get sand in all theirclothes.
Toys that help with coordination and controlled movement are also a good choice.
Bowls filled with beads, beans or jelly beans are good for sorting, counting and grouping. Excellent for controlled movement.
Building blocks-simple wooden blocks, large dominoes for stacking also help with controlled movement. Also try empty milk cartons for stacking.
Play-doh is always a favorite-make your own play-doh and use Kool-Aid to not only color it but give it a fruity scent. Your child will be developing sensory awareness and visual motor integration skills as he plays.
Keep a box around filled with wheeled toys. Toy trucks and cars of all sizes. These deal with non-verbal expression, problem solving and self-control.
Keep toys in site so your child cansee what available-avoid opaque containers and lids. Baskets are great for this.
You can find many toys in local stores and make your own from even around your house without having to spend a lot of money on adaptive or special needs toys. Mainstream toys help with developmental skills such as cognitive awareness, controlled movement and coordination-and don’t forget they are fun!
